Key Mistakes when Purchasing Chemicals for Your Wash

  1. Buying based on drum price vs. a true cost per car analysis.

It’s easy for a supplier to give you a low priced drum of product or tell you they are 25-50% cheaper.  The proof is in the actual cost per car while achieving the desired result in your wash.  Insist that your chemical supplier do a volumetric analysis on their products and give you a true cost per wash figure.  A $500 drum that is used at 4 oz per wash is 5% less expensive than a $300 drum that is used at 7oz. per wash.

Also be sure that you are getting the desired results from the amount of product being applied.  Getting a car half clean is not a good value, even at half the cost.

  2. Focusing simply on the price of the chemicals and not the balance of the package offered by your chemical supplier.

Although the cost of chemicals is an important factor in deciding on a supplier, there are other factors you, as an operator should consider in your decision.
      • Does the chemical supplier provide you with regular visits and service reports detailing those visits, making sure your chemicals are being used most efficiently?
      • Does your chemical rep supply and update your marketing materials when they become faded or dated?
      • This extra set of eyes in your wash can prove invaluable in spotting potential problems with your equipment or offering suggestions or improvements you may overlook while being at the site on a daily basis.
      • Does you supplier offer a full range of products to meet your washes needs?
      • Does your supplier pick up your empty drums?
      • Does your supplier offer MSDS sheets on every drum?

It's easy for a manufacturer to focus on supplying the high volume products and ignore the less profitable low volume items that you also need to offer for a complete wash package. All of these things come at a cost to the supplier and should receive some weight in your decision process.
